Is Lorik Cana REALLY like Flamini on steroids? Who is he?

I'll be honest here. I've heard this name mentioned a lot since the summer but I have to be honest. Who is Lorik Cana?

A little birdy mentioned to me that Cana is a complete nutter. A bit like Mathieu Flamini on steroids.

If that is the case, and Lorik Cana is REALLY like Flamini on steroids, then I would be happy for Arsenal to sign him because I love Flamini to bits.

An even more hyped up Flamini sounds perfect to me......

Watching Fabregas and Flamini forming their partnership last season made me give a very bold prediction. Even bolder than Steve Bould.

I believed that Fabregas and Flamini could, and would, have developed a better understanding than Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit had.

Obviously following Flamini's departure last summer the partnership never had the chance to prove me right. So if Cana is better than Flamini, and more of a nutter than Flamini, then maybe, just maybe, Cana and Fabregas could be a better deal?

Who knows? I don't, that's why I'm asking you! Who is Lorik Cana and is he REALLY that good? Would he fill the role, and the hole, that Flamini left?

Keep it Goonerish.............

Marseille have been challenging this season for the Ligue 1 title and are above Lyon so that should give the answer to your question.

that he is more aggressive than Flamini doesn't mean he will partner well with Fabregas.

cana who?

that video tells it all

Anonymous said...

cana is one of the suvivors of the balkan war!! (exaggeration)

Anonymous said...

Cana is a favourite on all the Gunner forums for his tough tackling, fouling, red cards and generally uncompromising play and vocal leadership.

However, he lacks the quality to play in our midfield. Technical ability is not high enough. First touch and passing percentage are suspect. Moreover, while his tough tackling wins him plaudits, unfortunately, he does not have the quickness of a Diarra or the long distance endurance of a Flamini.

Would be better off getting Mathieu back from Milan in Ade deal or having a look at paying over the odds for Marcos Senna, who despite his advanced age is a complete player.

More realistically, a player like Steven Defour (Standard) or Demy De Zeeuw (Alkmaar) could improve the squad. De Zeeuw in particular has a nice combination of experience and relative youth. At 25 he has been capped many times for Holland, has just won the Dutch league and has previously expressed his admiration of Arsenal and pointed to Fabregas as his favourite midfielder...

Maybe he's gonna be one of those experienced signings Wenger has talked about. I wouldn't rule out Toulalan of Lyon either. we know Wenger does like him some french speaking players. I'd prefer Yaya Toure to be my midfield signing if I'm being honest but he's unlikely to leave Barcelona considering he's just as important as Xavi and Iniesta in their midfield now. Last summer was the season to get him.

Here's my wish list for this summer. Sign one of Cana, Yaya, Inler or Alonso for midfield. Let go of Slvestre (perhaps a swap with cash for Sahko of PSG) and sign one of Albiol, Zapata, Hangeland or Sahko. And if we decide to release Adebator then replace him with Edin Dzeko who'd be perfect for Arsenal or Sell Adebayor to Milan for Gourcuff and between 8-12 mill.

Bing bang bom we'd be super next season.

Anonymous said...

I think the Arsenal fans would like him, but I think the Premier League Refs would like him too.

Not sure we need someone that is going to spend a lot of time suspended. Agree with the other comment.

Get Flamini back as part of the Ade deal. Problem solved and we already know Flamini and Cesc works.

goonerkas said...

marseille accepted a bid from us in the summer and he even passed a medical. unfortunatly cisse left before and marseille cancelled the deal last minuite

Anonymous said...

IMAGINE....

they give us ten million and flamini

we give them adebayor.

would that seem like a fair deal? I'd DEFINITELY like that. by all accounts flam' has really made a mark there towards the end of the season, but if there's a change of management (or they just really want ade that bad) then maybe theres a chance?

maybe?

probably not unfortunately :(

Noone will be coming he is gonna sit on his hands as usual coming out with this tired old excuse that we will have to pay for the stadium first and improve contracts with Van Perise then claiming the young ones are more mature and we will challenge, exactly the same drivel as last year.

hmmm maybe i like the look of him but i just don't know, its the french league, this is the english league, the most physical of them all. you never know what he'd do here. and to whoever said yaya i would reject him for one simple reason... ACN!

This guy cant play for arsenal. I think he must really be on steroids. He is a damn hard tackler and those kind of tackles will earn him enough red cards. I understand u fight for ball, but for christ sake, its just a game and not a war. but i like his attitude---it suck really, meaning he aint no pushover

Anonymous said...

He would get set off every other week, I can see him now scything down Ronaldo, sign him

aqqe said...

I do know quite a bit about him since Marseille is my "2nd team" and I follow Ligue 1 closely.

He's the captain of Marseille and Albania and even if he does like a fight and a tackle, he is not like the monster the youtube videos make him out to be. He is an aggressive player though, and he's used to playing next to a play maker who has all, or most of, the creative responsibility because he plays slightly behind Benoit Cheyrou at Marseille. So he could definitely fill the role behind Cesc. He's a good age too, quite a bit under 30 but still experienced. Good leadership qualities and everything.

In my eyes he should be a definite buy, seeing as Marseille will lose out on the title and their boss is leaving next season.

But there are other equally suited players out there, and whoever Wenger buys (as long as he buys) I will be happy.

Anonymous said...

think we could afford him.
looks great.
the other teams would be scared :D

Anonymous said...

Just saw the vid, have to say this guy looks a total maniac! love to see him pull one of those tackles on C.Ronaldo, F.Lampard or
"Stivie G" (don't tell me that doesnt sound like a 50 yr old pedophile) 4 arsenal next season..

some dude commentet on his lack of tecnique and passing percentage, i recon a month with AW on the training pitch would sort that bit out. i guess what i'm trying to say is: BUY HIM NOW!!!

him or as you say senna would provide our midfield with the needed streght and agression to win us the league

BEFORE YOU ALL MAKE ANY MISCONCEPTION, A FACT
IN HIS 3 SEASONS AT MARSEILLE HE GOT ONLY 1 RED CARD.

Anonymous said...

Hes picked up one red card over the last five seasons in leauge 1.. So id presume hes aggression is of the same nature as Robbie Savage, always bordering to reckless but rarely crossing that line.. Id love to see him (Cana) in Arsenal but i have to say my first choice behind Cesc would be Miguel Veloso..

Anonymous said...

I watched him play quite a few times. I haven't watched much Ligue 1 this season though. He definitely is a nutter. The videos on youtube over exaggerate a bit, and makes him look like somebody spiked his sack of cocaine. He has a never say die attitude and fights for everything. His technique could be better, but Wenger could easily work on that. Not saying he would be the perfect guy to have in midfield, if we're looking for a deep lying midfielder like Alonso/Carrick he's definitely not the guy for us because that's not his style. Somebody said it somewhere but I can't remember where, he makes Roy Keane look like my little pony and that is the perfect description of him lol. Maybe Nasri can put a word in. That being said though, Marseille did say he would cost more than Nasri.

This guy is a thug!He is an Albanian version of Joey Barton and nothing else.

Hardly missed a game since joining Marseille. We need player without major injury issues..

WC said...

Lorik Cana - potentially a very effective CM. He's not anything like Flamini and whoever told you that is either a complete moron or has never watched a Marseille game. Cana is more like taking the temperment of Vieira and mating it with Gilberto. He's not the most graceful or skilled player, but then again neither was Gilberto and we throw his name around alot as being a great CM. Cana is a fighter, think of your Sam Allardyce type player except without the constant malicious intent. He is a player to be feared and respected in the middle of the park - he's big, tough and is the kind of player that would add to that "steel" we all talk about in the midfield. I've been a long admirer of him as well as Toulalan. However another alternative is Benoit Cheyrou from Marseille. I see Cheyrou as the poor man's Xabi Alonso - anchors the midfield and his range of passing is superb.

Would be a great signing. He's the right age and although he may not be as technical as some of the other Arsenal midfielders, or score many goals, he knows his job and does it extremely well. But I can't help think that these stories are just repeats of last summer.

Anonymous said...

Denilson's a great central midfielder. My ideal choice would be Senna because he's a great player and is nearing the end of his career, unfortunately he signed a new deal with them just last year and said he doesn't want to leave.

Anonymous said...

He looks pretty reckless for me , but i like his commitment , and i don't think wenger would sign a player he thought would get sent off every week , he is the type of player we need , and someone like hangeland at the back would fill a lot of the holes in the team , too big physical players would add the physical element we have been missing for too long

Marko said...

One thing's for sure about Arsenal this summer and thats watch this space. I mean this is gonna be the first summer that I can remember that Wenger's and the board's hand has been forced by the fans who want signings. And really good ones at that.

For what its worth (nuffin) my choice as a DM would be Mamadou Diarra. Im pretty sure he'd be available.

Cana made French league team of the year this season.. He's an excellent DM.

Wrighty7 said...

We had a Diarra once Spike but the dolphin shaped div got a little impatient! Ha ha

Anonymous said...

Cana is a master on the DM position. Always does what he has to do and much MORE. He's also an exceptional leader as well. Don't pay attention to that youtube where he seems like a maniac.. it's just a clip showing him for his "warrior spirit" rather than fotball abilities. He can definitely get his job done. I can tell you that.

GoonerMD said...

Holy cow! Just watched a clip of him on youtube and that guy's a crazy animal. If we can control him (he only got 1 red card this past season!) he'd be great as a DM enforcer!

Makes me think of the movie "The Committments" -
"Micah Wallace...but he's an ANIMAL!"
"Yeah...but he's OUR animal"

Spike said...

Wrighty7;

Yeah, ol Dolphin Head was just a tad impatient!

JonJon said...

cana is really agressive and wears his heart on his sleeve but he isnt technical enough for the PL

hes like joey barton...

his you tube clips look great but ive watched alot of french football this season and cana has played mostly at CB where he has been quite average...ive seen no stand out performances from him...

liverpool played them this season in the CL and Cana struggled...

his agression alone isnt enough...

what we need is a new vieira/petit/edu/parlour/flmaini

someone who can kick ass but play a little aswell...

its just finding the right player...

JonJon said...

let me just add though

if he was available for the right price... say 5mil id snap him up and play him against teams like stoke in december when the pitch is muddy and ewe have to fight more than pass

he's be a good squad player for the right price

Anonymous said...

JonJon, what are you talking about? LMFAO

I've watched most of Marseille games this season and Cana never played CB more than twice. He's not as aggressive as those youtube clips suggest at all. You've obviously never seen him or at least PAYED ATTENTION to him

Since when did the PL become "technical" btw? LOL

Anonymous said...

I wish people would look up the FACTS before they start talking about how this guy is going to get red cards every other week.

His diciplinary record is actually fantastic, he has only ever been sent off ONCE, he rarely gets yellows because he always gets the ball, yes, his tackles are crunching, but if he gets the ball, who cares, we need a no nonsense midfielder.

And who said he was like Flamini on steroids? He is NOTHING like Flamini, totally different player.

Wrighty7 said...

How you doing Jonjon?

Anonymous said...

Cana's disciplinary record is excellent - but England has the most petulant up-their-own-arse referees in world football and someone like Cana would get absolutely slaughtered by them. you can see opposing players surrounding the referee at every tackle demanding action.

Having said that, I've watched Cana for the last couple of seasons and amazed he's only now hitting the radar because he is fantastic, a fireball DM who makes Flamini look like a snail. He would be Fabregas's bodyguard, ball-winner and defensive shadow. Would cost over £12m but worth it. A thousand times better than Barry.

JonJon said...

im good thanks wrighty...

did you enjoy the carnival yesterday??? good result and a great reason to get smashed eh??

and Anon...

im not here to argue the toss over a player that doesnt even play for us...

and yes the PL is technical...if it was down to brute force alone teams like hull stoke bolton and blackburn would make up the top four wouldnt they??

WC said...

JonJon

You are on drugs. Cana doesn't play CB for most of the season it's always Civelli and either of Zubar or Hilton. You sir are cluless about Ligue 1.

And by the way Civelli is looking to be a very good no nonsense defender and Brandao is one hell of a work horse up front. I would love to see him step up to a big league some time.

Spike said...

No offence, but that Civelli fella only played 11 times in the league foir marseille, so he aint really a regular. maybe Cana has played CB then???

Ooh, the plot thickens, not just the plot...

JonJon said...

ive watched marsaille play 5-6 times this season including the CL

and everytime canas played CB....

im not saying he is a CB..ive said ive seen him play there and i havent seen any stand out performances....

whats with everyone...why dont they stick up for their own players like this

Cana doesnt even play for arsenal and judging by some of the reactions you'd of thought he was in our hall of fame...

LOL

He is from Republic Of Kosova. Since we weren't independent when he started his international career, he plays and captains Albania. He used tu play for PSG and now plays for several years for Mareille as a DM and sometimes as DC when needed (smth similiar to Song). Of course he is by far a better footballer and is absolute record holder for picking yellow cards in France!

modgooner said...

There is no way i want Flamini back as part of any deal for Ade.He spent 3 seasons as a squad player who played well at left back for a while, got his place in the team , proved himself but like a lot of players in his final year of his contract played out of his skin and then focked off for a bigger pay packet. If Wenger wouldnt pay want he wanted then there is no way Wenger would lower
himself to pay it now and admit he made a mistake. Wenger never has abd never will buy back players who have left

but after watching him a good few times i havent seen what ive seen in the clips...and he lacks natural pace...and natural ability..something that i think would make him struggle in the PL...

but you never know...wenger might suprise us and he may be the missing piece...

afterall we do have enough natural ability...cana may be the player to balance it out...

but im sure wenger wont buy him solely on a you tube clip...

we need this guy or someone as mental as him we had the worst disiplinary record in the league when we were winning things so lets get a few nutters in and see what happens.

we also need to raid ajax for verhmalen and their keeper stkelenberg. buy Hangeland, Sakho and Bruno Alves, give milan what they want for gourcuff, offer lille 20 million for hazard and cayabe before madrid or barcelona do or worse the scum. and get rid of ade for 20 mil and bentdner for 10 and buy Huntelaar and the hulk from porto, problems solved, team witha bit of backbone

Raul Albiol is the player for Arsenal, tall enough, with good technical ability and pace. Would partner Fab in the center of the park and provide a solution if we have too many CBs injured like this year because he can play as a CB as well.

no offense, Wrighty, but what freakin rock have you been hiding under for the last four years? Cana is like VIERA on steroids. I would almost guarantee that he would get a yellow card in every game that he played for us, even in the PL. Place Palacios and Flamini together and there you have Cana. Naijarsenal, has a point about his ability to pass to Fabregas in link up play, but I could see him in a 4-1-4-1/4-1-3-2 setup with us.

Why don't we just take Flams back instead?

Or give Appiah a trial?

20 years ago today was the best day in the club's history as far as I'm concerned. We had lead the League throughout the season, but had run out of puff by April. I really thought that we'd lost it when Derby beat us 2-1 at Highbury. (I always hated Dean Saunders after that game) But the emotion of Friday 26th May 2009 will stay with me forever. The match was played in the context of the Hillsborough disaster. Liverpool had also won the FA Cup so were going for the Double. We Gooners had drawn our last home match in an agonising, nailbiting 2-2 draw with Wimbledon. Was it me or can anyone alse remember Richardson taking about 12 corners in the last 5 mins? I was sitting my A levels at the time, but all I could concentrate on the whole day was the match in the evening. I worked out what team I would have picked. I dreamt of how we'd get the 2 goal advantage, what the HT and FT score would be. I shut my eyes and saw Adams lifting the trophy. I don't think I've ever been so emotionally charged watching a game on TV. I've never felt so tense. It ended up with my younger sister watching it in her room, my parents watching it downstairs. I was far too nervy to watch it with anyone so I watched it on the TV in my parents' room. I can remember shouting whem Smudger scored, but then scared it would not be given. I screamed when Thomas hit it straight at Grobbelaar after 75 mins as I thought that was our chance gone. The last 5 mins were just agony and bloody ITV kept the ticking down clock on the screen. I yelled at the tele for them to take it off. And then the tears started to well up in my eyes as it began to hit me we might not do it. I just sat in silence crying as 90 mins approached. Next thing I knew Thomas was one on one. "hit it Mickey, hit it" I sreamed. And then the ecstasy. Throughout the Aw years, 3 jobs and 2 marriages - I don't think I've ever had such a pure release of such emotion and joy. I leapt off the bed, jumped up and down and (apparently) just kept screaming "Yes, Yes we've done it" I went beserk. There's still evidence of the crack in the loung ceiling from when I jumped off the bed. Next morning I apololised to the neighbours for the noise fromthe night before. I was on a high for about a week. Having seen the game again many times now the best images are the Arsenal players taking flowers to the liverpool fans, McMahon raising his finger telling all that there was 1 minute left, Rocky's clenched fist and the look on his face when he won the free kick for the 1st goal, GG walking up the Anfield stairs with the trophy. So what were other posters doing 20 years ago? What are your memories? And do you think it was our greatest day?

Unknown said...

Our current batch of CM is not good enough; simple reason...they do not get enough yellow cards. In tht position, one have to be aggressive. How many cards so Viera and Petit earns a season. That is their stripes. It is aposition that one must fight and intimidate. Being nice, then shift to wings like Diaby.

In my personal opinion this guy is probably the best replacement we can hope for,he looks a great player and would complement Fabregas well, thats when hes not off his feet. Him along with Naldo(Werder Bremen)who is a man mountain with a deadly free-kick and great defencive qualities, forget hahalend. Matuidi also looks a great promise, and reports in France suggest he’s signed a precontract a godd CDM. Finally a worldclass striker like Tevez, a fans-favourite at Man U, so they do have some Brain-cells. And by the way does any one know anything about the Pedro Botelho situation, could be a great player, could be sold so which one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guys shut down C. Ronaldo really easily in both games Albania played vs. Portugal. In Portugal, Albania played a good 60 minutes with 10 players, and C. Ronaldo still didn't do anything against Cana. I'm just saying, EPL defenders didn't prove they could stop CR. This guy did, twice! He doesn't have the skill of Cesc, but who does at CM? And Arsenal could steal him for 6 mill! Thats a lot, considering they tried to get him at 17, but he was not able to get a Visa. Same thing with Real Madrid, as he couldn't get a Spanish visa. But he did get a french one, and signed for PSG. Now the captain of Marseille, Lorik Cana has Albania, French, and Switzerland citizenships. You dont become the captain of a great club like Marseille, by being mediocre. This guy is a leader, and a solder. Arsenal fans will love him. The only problem is, WHO WILL SIGN HIM? Since, Everton, Liverpool, Tottenham, Stuttgart, Wolsvburg, Seville, and a couple unknown Italian teams want him, oh and Arsenal of course!
