Xabi Alonso-The perfect tonic for Fabregas.......

If the rumours are true and Xabi Alonso is indeed coming to the Emirates then I would be a very happy Gooner.

I've always rated Alonso and I believe that he and Fabregas could form a devastating partnership in the centre of midfield.

Alonso is exactly what Arsenal need right now. He will fit into Arsenal's pattern of play, is an international and most important of all he has that important ingredient Arsenal lack.......experience.

He has all the requires that Le Boss has stated he wants,

A) Alonso has Premiership experience

B) Is a "special player"

C) Is very clever and tactical

Being Spanish would help his partnership with Fabregas. They have played together for Spain on occasions and linked up well together.

People will say that if Liverpool don't want him why should we? Well I say more fool Liverpool, he'd be ideal for us.

I'd be more than happy for this to materialise. It wont happen yet. It will happen on August 31st. Trust me, that will be the day that we sign Alonso and Liverpool sign Barry.

What do you think? Would Alonso be a good signing?.........

Keep it Goonerish............

Denilson should play!

i like alonso to but i feel he is to much like fabregas and is not a dm player and that barry would be better at that job and why give liverpool the money to buy barry why not buy him ourselves

Alonso or Barry?

I wouldnt pay £18m for either but I'd prefer Barry as he is English.

Arsenal need an English backbone like Chelsea

Wenger wont buy anyone. We are finished

i like denilson & diaby a lot but Alonso would be a great addition to the team. hes an excellent passer, canny/"mischevious" and can break up play well. we dont need a total stopper like makelele, more a defensive but dynamic partner for cesc. the only drawback with alonso is that we could do with someone who was good in the air. thats something we lacked with flamini

Alonso is too laid back. The DM role needs a player with aggresion and tenacity to match the rest of his game.

I normally agree with you Wrighty, but we are far apart on this one.

Alonso would be a nice substitute for Fab in case of injury but brings nothing extra to the DM position. Mascherano plays in the holding role and Alonso plays the Fab role.

Now, if you said we should get Mascherano, I would even buy you a few drinks for that one.

there's been speculations in portugal about veloso coming to emirates, hopefully that come true. if not, i will love to see alonso, though he is not a typical DM, but will definitely bring in alot of experiences and creativity to the already superb lineups.

Veloso would be a better long term Bet. Not sure Alonso has got what it takes.Certainly not a holding midfielder!

Meteormonster,

We need to sign Mascherano. He is mustard. ;)

Benitez is obsessed with defensive midfielders, always has been, he collects them. Currently has best 2 in the game, Mascherano and Gerrard [even if he plays forward, he is a DM by nature] plus Leyva. Barry will just rot in there like Sissoko. Alonso is already withering as it is and is far too elegant for Rafa's Italian style anyway. He would magical for us. Arsenal could collectively defend anything he doesn't as we did in the 06' CL campaign.

I reckon we need a taller player to partner fabregas. Yaya is the solution!!

I cannot believe people are saying Alonso isn't a defensive midfielder??? He can play that role and give loads more to the team; great vision, passing and long range shooting. And as Wrighty7 says, he has premier league experience too.

The only thing is that rafa wants stupid money for him so he can buy Barry for even more exorbitant fee.

Barry would also be a good option as he can play left back and centre back too. But for £18 million????

Have to disagree. Alonso sits in one place and spreads passes about nothing else. We need a work horse so the likes of Fabregas can work his magic

Wrighty, this signing makes absolute sense. Primarily because Alonso is top class. Then we would have cover through the mid. He could easily deputize for fab in any event and help nurture the young talent coming through. With a signing like Xabi we would have a devastating midfield. Not many could compare to Alonso Fabregas, Nasri, and Walcott or Rosicky.
The the factor that leads me to belive this deal will actually be done is the fact that if Liverpool indeed want to land Barry they need to recoup some of that money and Arsenal seem to be the only suitors as of now.

Alonso is a fine midfilder, but is not defensive, for all I've seen of him. We need a midfielder with a higher workrate and hopefully pace, who will harry the opposition and win the ball. This is why the Cesc/Flamini partnership worked so well last season, Flam did the majority of the dirty work to free up Cesc. I really do rate Xabi, I think he's a technically gifted player and fine passer, but he would not fill the role we need filled. Unfortunately, I don't think either Diaby or Denilson do either, and unless this is addressed our midfield will look incomplete indeed.

Hes an ok player but do you really think people will fear us getting xabi alonso to partner cesc?
It doesnt sound devastating to me,

same with barry to be honest

plus he gets injured a lot which really isnt what we need, especially for the type of money being mentioned

veloso looks good to me, if not, i'm with wenger, i wouldnt be too worried, I cant believe we dont have a single CM who's unable to step up this year out of diaby, denilson, djourou, song or ramsey.

Wrighty7,
You are really talking rubbish today.
We need a hard working horse. We are talking here about someone like Flamini.
Alonso is none of that.

really.id prefer alonso.he is not too special and that will bring diaby some games in cm/dm.leaving fab 2 giv those killer passes.

I have to say that I can't see it happening, mainly for the money. Alonso is too expensive, and he's not going to run flat out and cover every inch of the pinch like Flamini did. Yes, we probably need someone with Premiership experience to slot straight in, but I can't see it being Barry either.
I'd like to see an experienced signing too, but more likely it will be Diaby. Just remember, no-one picked Flamini as the player to do it in midfield and be so good, so who's to say that Diaby couldn't do the same?

Alonso would be perfect for arsenal, although most fans would argu that he is not strong defensively so y buy him.
but we dont need a strong holding player as long as the team learns to defend as a unit, its smth we failed to do last time and sth Manchest u does very well, even with the likes of carrick and scholes in midfield

King_Kolo said...

I think Yaya is better then Barry and Alonso but Barca won't let him go.

Anonymous said...

navid... you cant compare man-u with us.... though i love arsenal to core. because, man-u have got players with experience, and their back 4 look solid most of the time... thats something we still need to improve..

still wish to see Veloso or Yaya coming in to emirates

The closest player Alonso resembles under Wenger is Petit - a deep lying playmaker who can release pace early.

I would love to see it happen, his passing is sublime and he can get stuck in as well.

I can't believe the ethos of this article. Why on earth would Wenger want Alonso? Why on earth would you pair him with Cesc? Do Spain? Answer: NO. Why? Becasue neither of them are defensively minded. We have enough passing/forwarding thinking midfielders as it is - he would add to the list.

Where would the solidity be with a partnership of Alonso on Cesc??? Can anyone enlighten me? Its not as if teams can't drive a double-decker bus through our porous defence as it is. Why give them more assistance without no holding midfielder in the starting XI I merely ask?

Anonymous said...

I pretty much said the same thing about liverpool and Alonso - they are mad to freeze him out

Rafa's seems to prefer Mascherano, who is just a glorified David Batty

Alonso would be immense for arsenal, all this bullshit about needing to have tenacity is misguided, he'd work perfectly in harness with someone like Cesc - but with Mascherano at the Olympics you'd probably have to wait for him

Denilson is a bit over rated imo, although he hasn't played much he doesn't impress me as much as some of the youngsters who have come through - probably be at Wigan in a season or twos time

cuntchops

Wrighty7 Hope get to talk to wenger? If not then all these comment add nothing to the team. if you can talk to him please make sure you tell him veloso is the best Man we need ok. he's got what alonso or barry can give and far better. Tell him to pay 15m for him and talk to him like he did to Ramsey and nasri, I'm Sure he will come. once he does please all gunner Funs Bit your Last Bit of your Money on them cos this is the time we fans need to gain from our team as well

Anonymous said...

To confirm in case you dnt really know who Veloso is. browse> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jNp1CoLoMw&NR=1

make sure you give a comment if Flamini or Barry/Alonso will be better at DM?

Anonymous said...

Alonso is Wenger's primary target.

Alonso may not be as mobile as Flam, but he's close and he doesn't need to be because he has oustanding positional sense and his football intelligence is something truly special. Xabi is also far superior on the ball and an infinitely better passer than Flam (does more with the ball and won't lose the ball as much) Xabi also possesses a better shot. And as for professional temperament is there any comparison. Wenger and Wrighty7 know this much, now so do you.

Why we may not get him? He's too old for silly money.
